	I love to make baby quilts for friends and family, and occasionally for commissions. It is also a good format for trying out different techniques, colour combinations, and interesting blocks. Whether the quilt will be handed down from child to child, or loved to bits, it is a special gift to welcome a new baby with something hand-made with love and care.
	Baby Quilts

	Colourwash I-Spy A child's quilt in bright commercial prints. Images of all sorts of animals, toys, familiar objects, arranged in a sweep of colour from blues and greens, through yellow and red to black and purple. Backed with snuggly flannelette 112 cm. x 92 cm. Sold.

	Viola Made from a pack of co-ordinating cotton prints in violet and green. 93 cm. x 79 cm. sold.

	Reuben's quilt A young woman was given one of my quilts, a very pink and girly one, while expecting her baby. When the baby turned out to be a boy, she chose the fabrics and I made her another one in exchange for the girly one. I could put the little boy's name on the quilt because I knew who it was for. She was very happy with the result.

	Kakariki While I was making Reuben's quilt, so many people admired it that I made another similar one to take to the Little River Craft Station Co-operative. The backing is bright green flannelette, which explains the name. It sold in two weeks. Sold

	Blue Ombre Stars I made this for a friend. Although her baby was a girl, she didn't like pink and wanted blue. I painted the background with blue dye to get the ombre effect, with the dark outside shading to pale in the centre, and the stars shading the opposite way. I quilted close around the stars, so that they are soft and puffy. Sold

	Party Pinwheels A bright and lively cot quilt in modern style, commercial cotton prints on crisp white. Quick drying dacron batting. This item is on display at the Little River Craft Station. NZ$99.00

	Blue and Gold Ombre Stars I liked the ombre effect in the blue stars baby quilt, so I made this with gold stars. The background is hand painted with fibre-reactive dye, shading from dark outside to pale in the middle. The stars shade from deep gold to pale yellow in the opposite direction. I quilted close around the stars so they are soft and puffy. 100% cotton lawn, cotton flannelette backing, quick drying dacron filling. NZ$100.00

Butterfly Series

Princess Butterfly1

This was a special request for a baby quilt with pink butterflies.
I couldn't find suitable fabric, so learned to print fabric on the computer.

I printed the butterfly fabric myself as I couldn't find fabric I liked.

II printed this fabric with lots of different sized butterflies and appliqued a flower in the centre.
Hand dyed sashing and a sparkly border made it a bit different.

I dyed these fabrics to make a colour gradation in opposite directions. As I sewed it, I listened to Jonathon Besser's music and thought it looked like a dawn sky, lightening from the bottom but with cool stars still shining at the zenith.

Indigo is a lovely colour in every shade from dark to softest blue. I used my hand-dyed cotton with golden yellow for contrast. It made me think of sunlight breaking through the clouds. The quilting patterns are clouds, rain and mountains
